CIDB and MPC collaborate to produce IBS champions

CIDB Pulau Pinang, working with the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC), aims to produce IBS Champions in the construction industry in the state.

The partnership is expected to generate highly-skilled talent pool in Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) construction technologies.

The IBC Champions programme is the brainchild of CIDB Pulau Pinang and MPC, and will be eventually rolled out nationwide, said Chief Executive of CIDB Malaysia, Dato’ Ir. Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid.

Earlier he witnessed the MoU signing between the two agencies during the Redesigning Construction for the Future & the 4th Industrial Revolution Seminar here today (February 6, 2018).

The seminar was jointly organised by CIDB, MPC, CIDB IBS Centre and CIDB Pulau Pinang. Also present was MPC board member Dato’ Muhamad Noor Yacob.

Ahmad ‘Asri, in his speech, urged construction stakeholders to take the opportunity to participate in the IBS Champions programme to see for themselves the advantages of the IBS and BIM technologies.

“I believe the success of this IBS Champions programme will give more confidence to the construction companies nationwide to implement IBS and BIM,” he said.

The partnership between MPC and CIDB is also part of the efforts to drive awareness and encourage the construction industry to embrace Industry 4.0, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“The local construction industry landscape is undergoing rapid growth whereby major and complex projects such as the Mass Rapid Transit project, the Pan-Borneo Highway and the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development project in Pengerang, Johor, are currently being carried out throughout the nation.

“As such, adopting modern technologies such as IBS and BIM are important to ensure these projects and delivered in a timely manner and of high-quality,” said Ahmad ‘Asri.

Apart from the IBS Champions programme, CIDB will also be working with MPC on two other key focus areas to improve the productivity levels and modernisation of the construction industry.

They are:
1. To encourage Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) construction players to utilise BIM software and trainings through MPC’s Skim Peningkatan Produktiviti Entrepreneur (SPPE) initiative; and
2. To measure productivity levels in the construction industry through MPC’s e-Productivity Gain Measurement (PGM) Tool.

The adoption of IBS and BIM construction technologies in the construction industry is vital to enhance and elevate the level of productivity, quality and safety at construction sites. The use of IBS and BIM will also enable construction industry players to achieve higher cost-effectiveness.

The National Council for Local Government (Majlis Negara Kerajaan Tempatan) has mandated the use of IBS for all private sector projects with a minimum value of RM50 million and to attain a minimum IBS score of 50 by 2020. As for the public sector, the Ministry of Finance has directed all public projects worth more than RM10 million to achieve a minimum IBS score of 70 by 2018.

On the use of BIM, CIDB has established the myBIM Centre to increase the adoption of BIM and the number of BIM practitioners in the industry. Through the use of BIM, industry players will be able to virtually analyse and correct key physical and functional characteristics prior to the construction process.
